Q1. Please briefly introduce your career.

Looking back on my life, I’ve experienced many things that I didn’t plan or intend. With various coincidences, luck, and the help of many people, life has generally been smooth. After completing my undergraduate studies, I entered graduate school and majored in Engineering Economic Analysis. Around the time of completing my master’s degree, I also considered pursuing a doctorate, but I lacked confidence in my major and wanted to gain work experience, so I chose the path of employment. I worked for six years as a system analyst and developer at an IT service company, where I gained many experiences that I didn’t learn in school. In the late 1990s, prompted by the IMF financial crisis, I left the company and went to the United States. Although I didn’t originally go there to study, I coincidentally started studying for a doctorate. Since then, I have been at KAIST for 15 years, conducting research with students.

Q2. Could you please introduce the subjects you teach?

I teach “Management for Everything” and “Digital Fabrication for Society” for undergraduate students, and “Seminar on Digital Innovation and IT Management” for graduate students. “Management for Everything” is a basic elective course for freshmen, where we think about and learn how to apply the basic concepts and principles of management to our lives. In short, it’s a class where we think about “how to live.” “Digital Fabrication for Society” is a course where students solve various social problems they experience in daily life using digital technology and tools. Through this course, students can experience the joy and achievement that creators feel and cultivate a sense of responsibility for social issues. “Seminar on Digital Innovation and IT Management” is a course for graduate students preparing papers on the theme of digital technology and innovation. It’s a class where students understand what research is being conducted in the field of digital innovation and then conduct their own research by choosing their own topics.

Q3. What are the main research topics you are currently interested in? What are the emerging issues in your research field?

Digital innovation and digital transformation are my main research topics. I am interested in how digital technology and innovation affect individuals, companies, and countries. Digital technology has become an indispensable element in business management and our daily lives, and how it is utilized determines the competitiveness of companies and countries. Recently, many people have been interested in technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, but the fundamental issue is not the “technology” but the “people.” People create innovative technologies, utilize them, and are influenced by them. The error we easily fall into is becoming dependent on the technologies we create. In research on digital technology or innovation, there is a need to seriously consider the role of people.

Q4. Could you please offer some words of encouragement to current students?

Students at the Graduate School of Innovation & Technology Management (I&TM) are mostly part-time students who work while studying. It’s not easy to balance work and study, so it’s much harder than just studying. Despite the difficulties, I admire and applaud your passion for studying and giving your best. The time you spent studying at KAIST will be the brightest moment in your life, and the professors and colleagues you meet here will be your most precious assets. It will be tough, but I hope you don’t lose sight of your original intentions and give it your all.

Q5. Lastly, what message would you like to convey to those considering I&TM?

The first thing to do to start something is to “show interest” or “make up your mind.” If you show interest and make up your mind, you’ve already completed more than half of the task. If you have no interest or can’t make up your mind, nothing will happen. Generally, things tend to flow in the direction of what you set your mind to. If you’ve started showing interest in the I&TM at KAIST and have made up your mind to enroll, there’s a good chance it will happen. The I&TM at KAIST will provide another opportunity in your life. I hope you can unfold your dreams with excellent professors and passionate seniors.

Q1. 교수님의 경력을 간단하게 소개해 주세요.

저의 삶을 되돌아보니 제가 계획하거나 의도하지 않았던 일들이 많았습니다. 여러 가지 우연과 행운, 그리고 많은 분들의 도움으로 삶은 대체로 순조로웠습니다. 저는 학부를 마치고 대학원에 진학하여 <공업 경제 분석>을 전공했습니다. 석사를 마칠 무렵 박사 진학도 생각해 보았지만, 전공에 대한 확신도 없었고 회사 경험도 해보고 싶어 취업의 길을 택했습니다. IT 서비스 기업에서 시스템 분석과 개발자로 6년을 일했는데, 학교에서 배우지 못한 많은 것을 그곳에서 경험했습니다. 90년대 말, IMF 외환위기를 계기로 회사를 그만두고 미국에 가게 되었습니다. 원래 공부하러 간 것은 아니었지만, 우연찮게 박사 공부를 시작하게 되었고, 그 이후 KAIST에 와서 15년째 학생들과 같이 연구하고 있습니다.

Q2. 교수님께선 어떤 과목을 가르치고 계시는지 소개 부탁드립니다.

학부 학생들을 위해 <모든 것을 위한 경영>과 <사회 문제 해결을 위한 디지털 제작>을 강의하고 있고, 대학원 학생들을 위한 <디지털 혁신과 IT경영 세미나>를 제공하고 있습니다. <모든 것을 위한 경영>은 학부 새내기들을 위한 기초선택 과목으로 경영의 기본 개념과 원리를 자신의 삶에 어떻게 적용할 수 있는지 생각하고 배우는 과목입니다. 한마디로 “어떻게 살 것인가”를 고민해 보는 수업이라 할 수 있습니다. <사회 문제 해결을 위한 디지털 제작>은 학생들이 일상생활에서 경험하는 여러 가지 사회 문제를 디지털 기술과 도구로 해결해 보는 과목입니다. 학생들이 이 과목을 통해 제작자들이 느끼는 희열과 성취를 맛볼 수 있고, 사회 문제에 대한 책임 의식을 키울 수 있습니다. <디지털 혁신과 IT경영 세미나>는 디지털 기술과 혁신이라는 주제로 논문을 준비하는 대학원생들을 위한 과목입니다. 디지털 혁신 분야에서 어떤 연구들이 진행되고 있는지를 파악하고 학생들이 직접 주제를 정하여 연구를 수행하는 수업입니다.

Q3. 교수님께서 현재 관심을 두고 연구하고 계신 주제는 무엇인가요? 연구 분야에서 요즘 떠오르는 이슈는 무엇인가요?

디지털 혁신과 디지털 전환이 저의 주요 연구 주제입니다. 디지털 기술과 혁신이 개인이나 기업 그리고 국가에 어떤 영향을 주는지 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 디지털 기술은 기업 경영이나 우리 일상생활에서 없어서는 안 될 요소가 되었고, 이것을 어떻게 활용하느냐에 따라 기업이나 국가의 경쟁력이 달라지게 됩니다. 최근에는 많은 사람들이 인공지능이나 블록체인과 같은 기술에 관심을 두는데, 본질적인 문제는 사실 “기술”이 아니라 “사람”입니다. 혁신적인 기술을 만든 것도 사람이고, 그 기술을 활용하는 것도 사람이며, 그 기술에 영향을 받는 것도 사람이기 때문입니다. 우리가 쉽게 빠지는 오류는 우리가 만든 기술을 타자화해서 그 기술에 종속되는 것입니다. 디지털 기술이나 혁신에 대한 연구에서 사람의 역할을 진지하게 고민할 필요가 있습니다.

Q4. 재학생에게 격려 말씀 부탁드립니다.

기술경영전문대학원에 다니는 학생들은 거의 대부분 일을 하면서 공부를 하는 시간제 학생들입니다. 일과 공부 둘 중 하나만 하기도 쉽지 않은데, 두 가지를 동시에 해야 하니 공부만 하는 학생들보다 훨씬 힘들 겁니다. 어려움 속에서도 최선을 다해 공부하는 여러분의 열정에 존경과 격려의 박수를 보냅니다. KAIST에서 공부했던 시간이 여러분의 인생에서 가장 빛나는 순간이 될 것이고, 여기서 만난 교수님들과 동료들이 여러분의 가장 소중한 자산이 될 것입니다. 힘들겠지만 초심을 잃지 말고 최선을 다하기 바랍니다.

Q5. 마지막으로 대학원 입학을 고려하는 사람들에게 전해주고 싶으신 말씀 부탁드립니다.

어떤 일을 시작하기 위해서 제일 먼저 하는 일은 “관심 두기” 또는 “마음먹기”입니다. 관심을 두고 마음을 먹으면 이미 일의 절반 이상을 끝낸 것과 같습니다. 관심이 없거나 마음이 가지 않으면 아무 일도 일어나지 않습니다. 세상 일은 대체로 마음먹은 대로 흘러갈 확률이 높습니다. KAIST 기술경영전문대학원에 관심을 두기 시작했다면 그리고 입학하기로 마음먹었다면 그렇게 될 가능성이 큽니다. KAIST 기술경영전문대학원은 여러분의 인생에 또 다른 기회를 줄 것입니다. 훌륭한 교수님들 그리고 열정 있는 선배들과 함께 여러분의 꿈을 펼치길 바랍니다. <I&TM 인터뷰, 2021>
